I ended up getting into the final round but wasn’t able to completely the final cipher before everyone else so I did lose :( but I think I got a free pair of jeans so in some way I’m a winner! Just not a way that includes $100,000.

I’m really impressed. I’ve added Grayson Ozias IV as a friend on fbook [and yes, “GO Fo[u]rth” is really funny].

This is a gorgeous photograph – coupled with one of my favorite Whitman poems. I use it with my high schoolers every year – and we look at who Whitman’s poem, Hughes addition “I, too, Sing America” – and then I have them write their own. I’m always pleasantly surprised by how keenly the pick up what who we should value as the builders and sustainers of our world.

I’m always impressed that they take to this poem of Whitman’s so well – and react so personally. It certainly says a lot about Whitman and this poem.

Great post.

How does it tally, though, that the face is looking backwards but your words are all about pushing on into the future?

I love driving around, seeing new places, meeting new people and of course encountering the occasional roadblock. When I read “Song for the Open Road” I was stoked after just reading the title. I too thought about what Walt would say if he knew that I had traded my own two feet and a sturdy pair of shoes for a car that can navigate across the country quickly and easily.
However I have realized that a journey is a journey. Regardless of distance or means it’s the experience of leaving your comfort zone and going somewhere new. Companions are crucial.

Truthfully it was taken by my girlfriend since I was driving but it turned out much better than either of us expected!

It is similar to how I think about this technology, and the ability to explore a road through something as profound as the American Bard’ poetry.

How you are tracing your own movements is in many ways exactly the point of all this in my mind, and open dialogue about the road we travel.

Thanks for pointing out the temporal and a-temporal aspects of Whitman’s writing. Yes, I agree, the “meta-temporal” qualities help put the mundane into a wider perspective.
